we now have doors on both bathrooms & the bedroom, we’re shy one door, the closet, and are on the hunt for one. he first built the frame for the door, routed the door for hinges, we went with four hinges instead of the standard two because our doors are 8 ft tall and solid wood.. super heavy. he even got the trim around the door and is now putting the trim around the rest of the doors this week.. such progress, we feel like we can see a teeny tiny light at the end of the tunnel.
on another subject.. the camera and i do not get along when it comes to this master bathroom (hence the black & white today.. a bit more forgiving), the pictures always turn out weird colors, not sharp, so frustrating! entirely the camera i’m sure (; if any of you reading know of easy online software for creating collage photos will you PLEASE send me an email or leave the info in a comment? the software i used closed shop and i have yet to find a simple site for combining multiple photos into one, and can i just say it’s making me a little crazy.

sooo… have you heard the term multi-tasking? we’re up to our eyeballs with it around here. normally we’d have at least a photo update (or five), but. but, we kind of have a lot going on and nothing to show all at the same time. you know how one thing gets started and then has to dry, or you can’t get all the pieces and parts you need on the same side of town so that project gets pushed a day? well, that’s us in a nutshell. closet light, closet shelves & rods, speaker holes, speaker holes needing a little bit of adjustment and mud that takes a day to dry, paint that needs to dry. are we busy? yes. do we have pictures to show you today? no. you’d be like why in the world are they sharing that photo? so instead, laugh a little with us because we’re in one of those five steps ahead, two steps back stages, and if all goes well we should have lots to show in another day. (if all goes well) (;

»»» how was your weekend? ours flew by. it was sunny and warm and that’s the forecast for most of the week, yes to spring (fingers crossed, supposedly a march snow is the norm around here.. phoo!) and we’re loving daylight savings time, why can’t it be this all year round? wouldn’t it be so nice if it was light every single day till 9 p.m.? i’d get so much more done. a little update.. we had previously planned on double doors for the closet (which i cannot find one single photo of btw) but realized last week this would cut the space for a bedside chest down to almost nothing on that side so sean took our double door down to a single and is finishing the mudding and sanding of the bedroom getting us ready for paint tomorrow or wednesday. i see a trip to wally world for hangers in my very near future. → good news.. the bathroom is primed, painting has started, the bedroom is plastic sealed {very dexter like}, the first round of sanding is over, he’s putting on the last thin coats of mud, and more priming & painting are on the weekend schedule. and the thing i am most excited about, next week… i’ll have a real honest-to-goodness normal closet again, although i do have to share it and this is one place i typically prefer not to. he likes to not share cake & cookies, i like to not share closet space.

We’re not done yet but we’ve come a long way.. you can tell it was getting dark on that final photo (we’re not fully lit up in the house yet, but didn’t want to keep everyone in suspense on what we were up to around here) (; This is our first convection microwave and convection oven, a GE Monogram set. Pretty fancy schmancy right? Well.. we couldn’t have sprung for such a high end set but we did a little craigslist shopping and after a lot of constant checking and rechecking, paydirt! A comparable GE.M set would cost around $5000 new, this set was for a model home, barely used, and we scored both for a total of $900. We’re happy dance happy about that… now we just have to learn how to use it. (of course we have to finish first, this is just the beginning)
We have more cabinets to build..for the fridge (we just scored a vintage beauty.. more on that later), the sink, the washer and dryer.. all are on this one section of wall. Once the basic frame is built we’ll put fancy finish wood on the outside, pick out cabinet doors, hardware..you know, all that fun stuff. For now, we’re happy the oven isn’t on the floor anymore.

→ we wanted a door that stood out & you wouldn’t see eveywhere..
we had two made (for both the front & side) and will be painting them a really fun color…

→ because the brick is double layered on the house the door frame is double the depth..
he built a matching frame to mirror the original, our future screen doors will hang from this
second frame and give us room in between the screen & door for hanging a wreath…

→ once the second frame was built to the edge of the wall he framed in around the entire
door to create a seamless frame (and covering the yellow spray foam & plywood).

This type of trim work is a really easy DIY, electric tools make it the most simple but manual will work. To match the door trim would have been hard to find because of the thickness, so as long as you have good wood (in this case 3/4 inch and the door frame is 1 1/4) that is smooth (most important) you’ll be all set for an easy project, and you can get pre-primed like we did for one less step. We compensated for the 1/2 inch loss by using 1/2 inch plywood, which also saved money, and you never see it to know it isn’t a 1 1/4 inch piece of frame. To make it seamless (we’re not quite there yet) use short hair Bondo (a fiberglass compound that you mix and is easy to sand.. only use the short hair, no substitutes) on the major joints connecting the two frames together and use caulk for all of the edges and corners. (Bondo is too hard to sand in super tight places/corners)

→ we know it’s been a little quiet at *camp1899* lately and here’s why → the man behind all of our diy goodness (my mister) was gone for two weeks back to the carolinas… and trust me on this.. me doing what he does is not a good idea. (; he’s just now back and taking a few days off (much deserved & needed!) before getting back into the full swing of things. so while it may have sounded like crickets in the far far distant, it’ll be non-stop action starting up next week … thanks for following along with us, we’re just as ready to have it get going (as you’re probably ready to see something new).

Best. Best. BEST. thing. ever. Depending on the size of your house (and water needs to fit said house) a regular water heater will be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to ? making it most certainly a less expensive way to go for heating your water. BUT. If your budget allows you to spurge a bit, for our needs to the tune of $1500, you can have a Quietside Tankless Water Heater. And for that pretty penny.. you’ll have unlimited (UNLIMITED) hot water. You can take a steaming hot shower for an hour, no problem. Got guests, like 10, back-to-back hot showers.. no problem. And can I just tell you… it. is. HEAVEN. I turn the shower on and 30 seconds later it’s piping hot and ready to go for(ever). Two things we are pretty much over the moon about…. this and wall mounted toilets with no yucky bases to clean. Just saying.. leave a little extra room in the budget, you’ll never regret it.
(~we purchased ours directly from Quietside)
