we had the best weekend! we had company in town (love visits from the fabulous miss L) and took time off for a mini road trip. we started in idaho springs, it’s en route to vail and we’re are always tempted to stop but…it never seems to happen. it’s nestled between two mountains and is only 3 blocks wide and 3 miles long, very quaint. we had the biggest fried mushrooms ever at tommyknockers plus they brew some seriously good beer (i recommend the stout). next was echo lake (one of our favorite trips from last year, see that visit here & here), we were lucky, it was beautiful and sunny and warm. there is something so charming about echo lake, the picnic area, and lodge (although the lodge was a few days shy of opening for the season), the air is the cleanest, crispest air i’ve ever been in, if you have even a short time in the denver area it’s a great spot to visit. our last stop was evergreen, the drive from echo lake to evergreen takes you winding down the mountainside and past echo run ski area, have any of you skied their runs? and.. we could.not.help.ourselves.. we had to do a little wine and port tasting to round off the day, i mean we did have company. (;

→ guess what this means? it’s tiimmmmeeeee! we’re finally sanding the front-end of the house, which means next we paint, and then officially unpack the rest of our stuff. he also got more trim finished around the door frames and baseboards in the bedroom, but… i didn’t get pictures fast enough before everything got a sheet of a plastic over it, so later, trim pictures. you would.not.believe. the amount of dust sanding creates, it looks like white sands national monument when he’s done for the day. and best of all.. i’m heading to the airport this morning to pick up one of my best friends for a weekend of fun and thrifting!

we now have doors on both bathrooms & the bedroom, we’re shy one door, the closet, and are on the hunt for one. he first built the frame for the door, routed the door for hinges, we went with four hinges instead of the standard two because our doors are 8 ft tall and solid wood.. super heavy. he even got the trim around the door and is now putting the trim around the rest of the doors this week.. such progress, we feel like we can see a teeny tiny light at the end of the tunnel.
on another subject.. the camera and i do not get along when it comes to this master bathroom (hence the black & white today.. a bit more forgiving), the pictures always turn out weird colors, not sharp, so frustrating! entirely the camera i’m sure (; if any of you reading know of easy online software for creating collage photos will you PLEASE send me an email or leave the info in a comment? the software i used closed shop and i have yet to find a simple site for combining multiple photos into one, and can i just say it’s making me a little crazy.

we don’t have a big red barn next to us anymore! this is the in between stage, but it’s looking so good… we tried out a chicago pizzeria this weekend with friends but i miss going here even more now (please!!! open in denver) we don’t have grass, a few weeds, but no grass, so we tried our eco friendly push mower on the neighbors grass and it works great. i read a really good grisham book, the litigators, and soaked up tons of sun. and we (and by we i mean he) got lots of little projects done… you’ll see this week. what did you do?

→ we’ve put off sanding for a hot minute to finish building the cabinets in the kitchen (it’s funny to even say kitchen since the kitchen is also the dining room, the living room, the everything except the bedroom and bathroom.. but anyhoo) since we only had the washer & dryer cabinet left to build. this is day one, the bottom is going to have a shallow drawer, we wanted to lift the washer and dryer up a bit so we didn’t have to bend over to the floor to get out wet clothes, it didn’t create a super deep space but deep enough to get something into, extra space being a bit scarce…and the top will also have a nice deep shelf for storage. as a follow up note, we’ve been using our asko w & d for awhile now and it is seriously the best system we’ve ever used, we highly recommend a set if you’re in the market for a stackable.

→ four hours. that’s how long denvers’ 50th anniversary st.patricks day parade was. we did not make it through it all, did we mention it was 4 hours? did your town have a parade? his favorite day of the year is march 17th, so we dressed up in green, hung out on our porch, grilled (cabbage.. which turned out amazing), and soaked up the sun. do you celebrate st patty’s day?

→ we can’t be the only ones that wake up and then blink and it’s after five already. our days are going by blindingly fast around here, as in not enough time in the day fast. in other news, the walls are sucking up the primer, after a second run to the paint store he’s finishing round two, we’re letting it dry overnight and start painting the final coats in the morning. we’re feeling very lucky, the weather is holding steady at warm & sunny and we’re able to leave the door wide open, airing out the little bit of paint fumes. hope it’s pretty where you are..

these are the last shots of the bedroom pre-paint..
the final dust (amazing how much dust sanding generates)
has been wiped/vacuumed off, 2 coats of primer next, tomorrow.. paint!
March 9th, 2012

→ good news.. the bathroom is primed, painting has started, the bedroom is plastic sealed {very dexter like}, the first round of sanding is over, he’s putting on the last thin coats of mud, and more priming & painting are on the weekend schedule. and the thing i am most excited about, next week… i’ll have a real honest-to-goodness normal closet again, although i do have to share it and this is one place i typically prefer not to. he likes to not share cake & cookies, i like to not share closet space.
