→ do you sleep with a noise machine or fan? we sleep with a very loud fan, without that noise we’re completely lost. monday night, 2:30 a.m. and we’re both wide awake because all of a sudden it’s completely silent and that sinking feeling sets in that the power’s out, and it was, until afternoon yesterday. back up for a minute… to get some light in the house i pull open the curtain and cannot believe it but this ↑ is what i was looking at. OYE. it was EIGHTY degrees less than 48 hours ago. it’s kind of an adjustment. we did get everything out of our cargo trailer, we’ve gotten further on the closet, but we feel like boxers dancing around a big to do list. snow, ice, rain, no power. we’re getting there though, we just don’t have much to show for it. have any of you built a house and lived in it at the same time? if you have we know that no explanation is necessary. we’re becoming very well versed in flexibility.

»»» how was your weekend? we had blue skies and seventies, so it was pretty perfect around our house. we cleaned our yard (which during construction takes about half of a hot minute to get trashed), walked all over town enjoying spring flowers and trees blossoming, hung out with the two cutest redheads ever (and the mr of the trio.. note to self, picture of all three next time!), ate amazing pizza from city o city, and a weekend or so ago we actually went out on the town, a rarity for us, and watched layden and his band, talk all night, perform. (if you’ve been following along with us, you’ll remember layden from this past summer, our neighbor who very kindly helped us with various jobs around camp1899). we even did a fair amount of projects inside the house… you’ll see this week. lastly we had a daniel craig weekend, have you seen dream house? it is really good, and we watched the girl with the dragon tattoo (which we knew nothing about prior to watching) and liked it a lot as well, until that last 5 minutes. don’t you hate it when that happens? have you seen any good movies lately?

»»» walking around the lake yesterday we spotted this baby beaver.. it was busy going from shore to underneath a floating dock building a dam… one tiny stick at a time (in the second photo you can just barely see the stick). so cute, we’re hoping to watch it grow.. if it’ll be out & about as much? the last photo is the very closest i came to getting a perfect shot of a fish jumping high in the air going for a little sunshine. apparently i need to figure out my shutter speed better.. it’s on my to-do list.

→ one of the many multi-tasking projects this week is the master bathroom ceiling. we continued with the blue beetle wood (except in the shower area), above is board one.. to half way. the bathroom is almost all carrara marble so we’ll be painting this wood white, unlike the rest of the house which we left natural. it’s a bit of a process, next week we should have tons to share… except it is going to be mid seventies all weekend and that is hard to resist… but we’re motivated so we should be able to mix work & play. (we’re hoping!) have a great weekend!!

yesterday morning we woke up to bright sunshine and sixty degree weather, gorgeous. went for a walk around the lake, felt the sun on our faces, looked at buds on the trees, perfect start to the day. this morning we woke up to 4 inches of snow on the ground (and still falling). whaaat? the snow had just melted. yesterday we talked about how it had finally gotten just-hot-enough that the 30 inches we had lingering had disappeared and now we’re all covered in white again. oh, and before it snowed, last night the wind was so strong i thought the house was going to blow away like in the wizard of oz. stuff was flying (literally) down the street, and with it we’re sure stuff from our yard because hello.. it’s “stuff” central all around our house. it was so loud for so long we expected the roof to fly off at any given moment. (we turned the tv up louder and acted like nothing was out of the norm at all.. it sortof worked)
but you came here to see a house diy update right? well, it’s a little like karate kid painting the fence around here, not much to see, all repetitive. he’s putting on mud, sanding off mud, putting on mud, sanding off mud (wax on, wax off) and there just isn’t much to show you at the end of the day (or three in this case). the master bathroom needed lots of mudding and sanding and he’s ensconced behind a curtain (no doors yet) doing just that. even when it’s finished all we will have to show is a white wall, that in photos will look no different (probably) than the walls you’ve already seen. but we’ll show you anyway. mudding, sanding, snow shoveling. that’s it for now.

we like simple living, not too much stuff, but stuff all the same, and i’m already sweatin’ over how little bit of stuff we’re going to have room for. it’ll be all for the best but oh there are so many pretty things out there. the end cabinet (above) is part of a unit he’s building to house the oven & microwave, washer & dryer, sink, and all of the electronics for the house (like the tivo, stereo & blu-ray..very important stuff). it’s more shallow and is both the all-things-entertainment and the pantry/? cabinet. you can see in the third photo how the wood stops short of the end.. that’s where the depth is compared to the rest. we’re using less expensive wood on the frame, good cabinet wood on the sides and exterior, and once all’s said and done we’ll be painting. we want the beetlewood on the ceiling to be the shining star of wood in the home, that’s why we’re painting versus using walnut or the like. tomorrow he’ll be working on getting our vintage fridge moved into place and what a beauty.. i’ve nicknamed it the golden egg if that tells you anything and there’s something special about it, you have to wait and see.

how was your weekend?
we marveled at MORE snow.
i wore my newest faux fur thrift find.
he took a 2 hour nap & i was hungry every five minutes.
we had sushi with this cutie pie redhead & her little red headed mama..
{& papa who we didn’t get a photo of}
we watched a star wars marathon.
bought a ticket for the lotto {325 mil} and sadly didn’t win.
watched the grammy’s and fell head over heels for adele…
{a little late to the game we know.. but better late than never}

We’re not done yet but we’ve come a long way.. you can tell it was getting dark on that final photo (we’re not fully lit up in the house yet, but didn’t want to keep everyone in suspense on what we were up to around here) (; This is our first convection microwave and convection oven, a GE Monogram set. Pretty fancy schmancy right? Well.. we couldn’t have sprung for such a high end set but we did a little craigslist shopping and after a lot of constant checking and rechecking, paydirt! A comparable GE.M set would cost around $5000 new, this set was for a model home, barely used, and we scored both for a total of $900. We’re happy dance happy about that… now we just have to learn how to use it. (of course we have to finish first, this is just the beginning)
We have more cabinets to build..for the fridge (we just scored a vintage beauty.. more on that later), the sink, the washer and dryer.. all are on this one section of wall. Once the basic frame is built we’ll put fancy finish wood on the outside, pick out cabinet doors, hardware..you know, all that fun stuff. For now, we’re happy the oven isn’t on the floor anymore.
