we heart movies. end of an era.

Ten years ago we had never heard of Harry Potter. A friend talked us into going to the midnight (first) showing of The Sorcerer’s Stone with promises that we would love it. We never looked back, it was amazing and we were sucked into the Harry Potter vortex. I (being the reader of the family) knew that the movies would never be the same if I jumped into the books so I decided to wait until it was all over. Sean, who never reads, was compelled to do the opposite and read the first two. Then we saw The Chamber of Secrets and he realized it was a mistake to read the books first (for him.. not necessarily anyone else) and didn’t read any further.

It was a little bit challenging because of course the books came out first and with them press and as the franchise grew to mega proportions so did the interviews, magazine articles, etc. and we deftly had to fend off comments with “we haven’t read the books, we’re waiting for the movie, don’t tell us anything!!!” and to this day I don’t know how we made it all the way till this past weekend with no one/no tv interview/no magazine headline/nada… tipping us off to the ending, where we happily got to come full circle and watch the end of this decade long journey in an almost empty theater.

We had trepidations that J.K. Rowling would buck the trend of a happy (or at least somewhat happy) ending and kill off Harry, Hermoine or Ron. It would have been such a letdown if after all these years everything went up in a puff of smoke, evil wins. Although it was weird to see Hogwarts in such a shamble in the end.. but now he and I have thousands of pages to turn and can start the saga all over.
Did any of you wait to read the books or did you follow along as they came out?

one of my favorite movies of all time is the shining.
the stanley hotel in estes park is where stephen king hatched the idea for the movie..
even though it wasn’t filmed here (but the mini-series was) they cater to fans.
if you’re a fan and haven’t seen the making of the shining.. it’s on dvd and is awesome.

we love austin. we love top notch. and. we love dazed and confused.

we had so much fun driving around austin looking for filming locations and our very favorite is top notch. i miss it. sean misses it. it has the best veggie burger and the soda on tap is like old time soda fountain soda. we went (twice) and had burgers and yes-we-did…have fries and onion rings and fried okra.. we know we know!! excess fried foods.. we couldn’t help ourselves. twice was being really, really (ridiculously) good because we both could have went everyday. it’s high on the list of coolest movie spots and even has a couple of props from the movie (soul pole anyone?) and you get good diner style food.

→ we drove through the tiny town of smithville, tx.(just outside of austin)
it’s where hope float was filmed (it seems to be their claim-to-fame) so while we were there..
we hunted down birdee’s (gena rowland) house and a few other places in town…
