you know we couldn’t be in a town famous for beer and only go to one place… so after kettlehouse we went to the old post, another locals hangout. sean had scapegoat, which unexpectedly tasted like grapefruit, and when we asked the bartender about it she had never heard that before…hmmm. good stuff. (i give a thumbs up to their darkest beer, seasonal blackfoot)

« walking around missoula»

montana is everything i’d dreamed it would be and more.. the most beautiful state i’ve ever been in. we drove up from yellowstone across montana through the towns of bozeman, butte, & missoula (where we stayed). we both immediately loved what we saw of bozeman and can’t wait to go back and really explore the town. have you been? missoula has it’s own unique, laid back charm. we walked all over and had the town to ourselves for the most part. i have wanted to go to montana for as long as i can remember and what i’ve seen of the state was absolutely spectacular, we both foresee many return trips in our future…

we had no idea missoula was so well known for it’s handcrafted beers until stopping in a local brewery, kettleHouse. this is also where we learned of a beer law (that we’ve never and probably will never hear of again..outside of montana that is) ….a three beer limit. after we ordered our bartender asked our names, wrote them on two small small scraps of paper with a number circled on it. when we inquired she told us that in the state of montana if a brewery makes and sells its own beer onsite they are only permitted to sell 48 ounces of beer (3 pints) to any customer in an evening. have you heard of this anywhere else?? i thought maybe more than 3 for me because my beer was only 9 ounces, but no so fast.. it was 10.5% and with the higher alcohol level, counts as three drinks. i had the Brick&Mortar Porter and it was awe-some, i like porters but tend to be more of a stout girl. he tried both the eddy out pale and the double haul I.P.A. and preferred the pale. we both sampled, very trepidatiously, the cold smoke. i tried a “smoked” beer at a beer festival in kennett square, pa and it tasted like sucking on a charcoal briquette (seriously), hence the trepidation. anyway, it isn’t smoked after all, just in the name, and was great..their best selling beer. a good locals spot if you find yourself in missoula.

north & west yellowstone are both fun little mountain towns,
(great places to stay if you don’t camp/stay in the park)
…and the scenery of north yellowstone made us never want to leave…

hmmm.. do you see it?

«liberty cap, named after it’s resemblance to the peaked caps worn during the french revolution»

« june & still icy »

mammoth is at the northern entrance to yellowstone (on the montana border),
from west to north is only 45 minutes. east yellowstone was still closed for winter.
can you imagine living where it’s still winter in june? i’d never make it.

you’d expect some sort of rumbling or gurgling when old faithful starts to “erupt” but it’s completely silent.. who knew? old faithful is so reliable they actually have a schedule for the whole day down to within twenty minutes. (a few hours lapse between eruptions & it lasted about ten minutes start to finish)

that’s allll folks!

the steam was so strong at times that we couldn’t see three feet in front of us, our hair was damp and everyone’s glasses were totally fogged. the steam comes and goes in strength but is always rolling off of the geysers, it stretches and blows across the landscape and can be seen from miles away as you approach, we felt like we had free facials.
