this week….

3

this week he’s been busy building all of the soffits for the house, although we won’t be spending lots of time on the exterior of the house (and yard) this year, a few projects are musts while the weather is good. painting the soffits (which he built using 4×8 sheets found here), the front porch roof has a bit more finish work, the gingerbread on the front is getting painted, and if all goes well today (you just never know..), he’s cutting and attaching the gingerbread to the back peak (above pics).

in other news.. our shiny new fridge was having an issue or two as well and sears is bringing us a replacement today, we just might have our first ice cubes by the weekend.. we feel like we’re in a seinfeld episode, no soup ice for you! and the vintage fridge went on it’s merry way yesterday to someone wanting just a freezer, so long live the golden egg.

and, it’s been nice and hot here which i love, but…. our ac/heating unit that we had installed has not been cooperating and we have not had the best of luck on finding reliable service for it. three hot nights of no sleep and it became numero uno on the list of must-be-done-yesterday. it’s not uber wallet friendly getting the problems fixed but we finally found a company that is fully versed in split systems (we have a fujitsu) and they’re coming back today to bring us cool cool air ( i hope), so fingers crossed for us people!! thank goodness it’s not 118 degrees here like lake havasu was yesterday, how do they do it?!

we’re baaaaaaccccckkkkkkkk!

camp1899 diy is officially on the move. he’s painting our living room/kitchen/dining room/everything room (; we’re painting the bulk of the house in charleston white to make the small space seem bigger, and allow accent colors to stand out more. we’ve chosen historic charleston colors for every color in the house, we can’t wait to get more painted. i hope you’re glad to see us back in action because we’re really happy to start checking things off of that to-do list of ours!

a dexter moment

→ guess what this means? it’s tiimmmmeeeee! we’re finally sanding the front-end of the house, which means next we paint, and then officially unpack the rest of our stuff. he also got more trim finished around the door frames and baseboards in the bedroom, but… i didn’t get pictures fast enough before everything got a sheet of a plastic over it, so later, trim pictures. you would.not.believe. the amount of dust sanding creates, it looks like white sands national monument when he’s done for the day. and best of all..  i’m heading to the airport this morning to pick up one of my best friends for a weekend of fun and thrifting!

take three steps…sideways

1

→ do you sleep with a noise machine or fan? we sleep with a very loud fan, without that noise we’re completely lost. monday night, 2:30 a.m. and we’re both wide awake because all of a sudden it’s completely silent and that sinking feeling sets in that the power’s out, and it was, until afternoon yesterday. back up for a minute… to get some light in the house i pull open the curtain and cannot believe it but this ↑ is what i was looking at. OYE. it was EIGHTY degrees less than 48 hours ago. it’s kind of an adjustment. we did get everything out of our cargo trailer, we’ve gotten further on the closet, but we feel like boxers dancing around a big to do list. snow, ice, rain, no power. we’re getting there though, we just don’t have much to show for it. have any of you built a house and lived in it at the same time? if you have we know that no explanation is necessary. we’re becoming very well versed in flexibility.

finishing the closet (we’re almost ready to unpack clothes)// dusting, vacuuming, priming // and instead of double doors for the closet, which we realized would make the bedside dresser space minuscule, we downsized to one // wood ceilings in the master bath // plus more mudding, sanding & priming // lots of progress (;

in the shower..

1

→ showerheads are one of those things that you don’t think a lot about unless you have one that you don’t like, then you can’t quit thinking about it (at least for the x amount of minutes you’re in the shower). in our last home i had a regular, unfancy, plain jane shower head, and sean had a rain shower head. for our new we-never-want-to-leave-shower, we wanted one that had/or was a handheld for easy shower cleaning. we went to lowes (you can seriously spend an unforeseen amount of money on something as simple as a showerhead in bath specialty stores) and the first thing we found out is that almost all of them are plastic. i don’t know about y’all but for $50-100 and up we were wanting something a little nicer, and more durable, than plastic.

soooo.. this narrowed down are choices considerably, as well as price, because no way were we spending hundreds of dollars. we got lucky though, this has a rain like shower (which i thought i wouldn’t like and instead love) and a removable handset, which i think is what makes the rain part so good because there’s really good pressure instead of feeling like you’re under something going drip, drip, drip.. plus tons of settings and is real metal! we chose chrome because it shows the least amount of water spots and we’re just saying.. if you’re in the market for a set, this is a good one. it isn’t sold at lowes anymore but i found it online here. (one last thing, it’s a set, with an on/off handle.. most were showerheads only, if all you need is the showerhead, you can find it here)

in and out

9

→ we wanted a door that stood out & you wouldn’t see eveywhere..
we had two made (for both the front & side) and will be painting them a really fun color…

→ because the brick is double layered on the house the door frame is double the depth..
he built a matching frame to mirror the original, our future screen doors will hang from this
second frame and give us room in between the screen & door for hanging a wreath.

→ once the second frame was built to the edge of the wall he framed in around the entire
door to create a seamless frame (and covering the yellow spray foam & plywood)

this type of trim work is a really easy diy, electric tools make it the most simple but manual will work. to match the door trim would have been hard to find because of the thickness, so as long as you have good wood (in this case 3/4 inch and the door frame is 1 1/4) that is smooth (most important) you’ll be all set for an easy project, and you can get pre-primed like we did for one less step. we compensated for the 1/2 inch loss by using 1/2 inch plywood, which also saved money, and you never see it to know it isn’t a 1 1/4 inch piece of frame. to make it seamless (we’re not quite there yet) use short hair bondo (a fiberglass compound that you mix and is easy to sand.. only use the short hair, no substitutes) on the major joints connecting the two frames together and use caulk for all of the edges and corners. (bondo is too hard to sand in super tight places/corners)
