… did you know that most southerners paint their porch ceilings blue? nicknamed haint blue it’s intended to keep evil spirits away. it’s more of a tradition now than for the spirits, but we’re not taking any chances at our house, one of these days (??) we’ll be sipping tea on the porch under blue slatted ceilings.

do you have any foods that you just cannot make yourself like? or even try? if you have foods you won’t even try i’d love to know what (besides crazy nobody-in-their-right-mind-would-ever-eat-foods). i’ll start. black licorice. tomatoes that aren’t salsa or ketchup or spaghetti sauce. horseradish (absolute horror crosses my face as i frantically look for anything to take the residue taste far, far away). raw onions. brown mustard.. while most contain zero horseradish, all seem to taste suspiciously like it. fennel, another food that contains none, but tastes just like black licorice. then there are foods that just don’t jive because of texture, blackberries for instance, too-many-seeds… for me. oatmeal, a lot of texture. sesame seeds on buns, not necessary. cilantro, just can’t love it. on the other hand i have some favorites that turn up lots of noses… okra, grits, pickled beets. your turn…will you share??

»»»» william faulkner once said, “well, between scotch and nothin’, i suppose i’d take scotch. it’s the nearest thing to good moonshine i can find.” one thing southerners have in spades is history with bootlegged liquor. moonshine that is. so much so that it recently (finally) made it’s way to the liquor store and became all legal. not saying it’s “all” legal now, just saying some of what’s made is now legally on the shelves. arkansas had it’s first legal moonshine hit the open market last year (and the husband has a bottle…) and some other southern states are following suit (like south carolina). and I have to tell you, in case y’all living outside of the south were wondering if it really is a big deal in the south still.. it is. i have been to too many parties to count where sometime in the evening the backwoods, bootlegged, mason jar full of high spirits comes out and makes the rounds. too. many. to. count. moonshine, alive and well in dixie and now a few legal bottles to boot.
