the perk of everything in a home not being finished asap is living with things and realizing what is not working like you thought it would. our original cabinet plans called for a vintage fridge that had no ice maker; so we planned to install an ice maker under one side of the island, and on the other side a 2 drawer dishwasher. and then what really happened (best laid plans and all). the dishwasher was a disaster, didn’t work, took forever to get refunded, and in the meantime i decided i never want another dishwasher; one empty hole. prior to that the vintage fridge went down in flames and enter brand new (with ice-maker) unit; no under the counter ice maker needed anymore, hole two.
the stackable washer dryer that previously had to go next to the sink could now be moved into our new empty spaces; which was apparently meant to be because they fit like they were made to go there all along, a little haha from the universe and our going the long way to get there. anyway. the cabinet that had been built to hold the w/d was disassembled, the sink now has a countertop next to it (hallelujah!) that can hold a dish drain for my hand washed dishes (not missing a dishwasher one little bit btw), and the silver lining is slow (even when it involves a re-do) can be just the thing you need. sometime in the near (distant?) future, our newly acquired counter space will have a concrete countertop to match the island and our farmhouse copper sink will finally have a home (besides the car, the bathroom, anywhere we can put it and not run over it). not earthshattering mind you, but one more thing off of our to-do list. we are pretty much head over heels for our newly painted doors. we want to bring as much of the south to our little western home as possible and decided early on that any and all paint colors chosen would be from the colors of historic charleston collection, which includes an all time southern favorite, charleston green.. our interior door paint choice. the exterior is rhett pumpkin (peach is one of my favorite colors) and we can’t stop talking about how much we love such a small detail! i love when something little can make such a huge impact.
the frames were very gold, which i loved in our last house but with a wall of 10 it was a bit liberace in this tiny space. we’re making a collage wall with photos from our travels and nothing was popping inside the frames, they stole the show and then some. so five coats later we’ve got hi-gloss white just waiting to be hung by the husband (i’ll post again once we sift through the thousands of photos and decide which to frame first).
this is the diy stuff that we love, from start to finish in a day or two and no hard labor required. later in the week we’ve got another big diy to share, we think you’ll love it….

over the mtns, through nederland co ↑ to lunch in boulder ↓

and home again ↓

how was your weekend peeps? we were very productive. 2 diy projects were checked off the list and i cannot wait to show you them tomorrow. totally smitten with ourselves and what we’ve done. (; plus the big biggie that is only waiting for me to get off my butt and get the post in order to show you, this week foh sho.
we also took a morning roadtrip and drove from edgewater, through the mountains, on a (why-do-i-forget-this-road-is-SO-curvy) loop going through some tee tiny towns and ending in boulder. skipped breakfast so we could indulge in vegan sandwich goodness from native foods (we first ate here in palm springs and hip hip hooray for one so close to us now!), of course i had the reuben. strolled the streets a little too full, then drove the back roads home again.
hung with the neighbors a little, cooked some crispy tofu (working on the perfect tastes-like-fried-chicken-but-it’s-tofu), finished season 7 of dexter and oh my. we love that show and are supremely disappointed that season 8 is the end. ); do you watch it? snow is on the forecast for tuesday, with heavy accumulation (according to weather.com), and i don’t think i need to spell out what i think about that _______.

ladies and gentlemen, we have fire!!! after a couple of hotplate years, we finally have a stovetop. immediately christened by husband with fake bacon (don’t knock it, when you don’t eat meat, fake bacon tastes good). we really wanted a big permanent griddle and this was the largest we could find on a residential unit, we won’t make pancakes for five at a time on it but we love it all the same. after cooking on an electric plate for so long we keep saying to each other.. look how fast that cooked! it’s amazing! funny the things that are so so fabulous when you’ve been away from them for awhile, although i’ve never cooked on anything even close to this nice before.
so there you go, one of our big home surprises we’ve been working on, and next week we have another to show, it’s rocking our world too, we’re feeling very lucky these days.

Our lovely set up.
If you haven’t tried Red Velvet wine from Cupcake…ya gotta try it my fellow DIY’ers!
It made for a lovely night of craftiness.

To help give us tork we attached the top to our pants with a safety pin, then started the bracelets with a simple braid. When you get to where you’d like to start your hex pattern (we really like the chevron look) you just add a bolt on each side strand to pull over and braid away. As you add more and more hex bolts you really need to hold the bolt tightly in place with your thumb…otherwise they get all twisted and yuck. By my 3rd bracelet of the night, I had it down PAT. We used waxed brown, silver and white strings plus an additional bracelet of mine for a little pop of color.
We were very addicted and didn’t stop until 1:30am!!! We had so much fun and by the end our fingers didn’t work well anymore… yeah, not the best part. I took apart some costume jewelry and added bling to some of the pieces.. (like the top middle white and sliver bracelet). My 5 year old daughter especially likes that one… Laura got her jewelry bag out and started mixing with her other bracelets. Magic! Some added color is so chic with the industrial and natural look of the bracelet. (we bought the string at Hobby Lobby (I had the twine on hand in my junk drawer) and bought the hex bolts at Menards, which range in size so pick your poison! Total cost for making 8 bracelets: $10)

here’s the link to the great blog they originated from..
As always, thanks for having us crazy chicas Tiffany! We love ya:)
xoxo, Lindsey & Laura
(lucky me.. i got a surprise in the mail, one of my very own!! thanks lindsey) (;

Hello Camp 1899′ers! I recently packed up my three kiddos and took a road trip to visit my bff Laura and super awesome DIY’er/decorator herself. This ugly to chic ottoman Laura/Lindsey DIY was brainstormed and completed in about a day.. our best work, if I say so myself.
We first laid the stencils out on the right side to get the “best” letters front and center for our ottoman lid, then simply placed the top of the ottoman over the stencils and eyeballed the size we would need to reupholster the lids, ending up with a 12 stencil block. We then flipped all the 5×8 stencils to connect them (with super tiny bits of tape) on the wrong side. Next.. the not so attractive, worn-purple-pukey color ottomans.. we bought new rope and fabric to cover them with….Laura found the darker of the two ropes first and then went back for the lighter version once we ran out. (both were purchased them at her local Ace Hardware store but can also be found at Home Depot and Lowes)

Laura and I sat across from each other, carefully taping all those suckers together… we hardly talked since it took a lot of concentration… I think I almost drooled once:) and then once we got started on the actual painting…we both had a brain fart and left it UPSIDE DOWN the way we taped it all together!!!!!! UGUGHGHGHGHGHGHGH. And to top it all off, it wouldn’t dry!!!!!! Not to be deterred from completing this before I had to head home to Chi-town Laura thinks of the most clever idea yet. BABY POWDER!!!!!! What genius. Totally worked and ended up giving us a perfect vintage hand stamped look to the print that we couldn’t have gotten without a little residual paint stickage to the fabric. Absolutely the stupidest, best mistake we made:) Thank heaven for red wine. (in the collage is a picture of us spray painting to see what would work better.. and stippling with a brush is definitely the way to go…)

(BTW, those sweet chairs the ottomans are paired with are ones that Laura picked up for $5.50 each at her local Goodwill then reupholstered and painted them. Super fantastic find!) Thanks for reading everyone and a BIG thank you to Tiffany for having us today. xoxo Lindsey and Laura
