denver-botanic-garden lilypads

happy saturday! do you have anything fun planned for your weekend? he’s finishing that project i hinted at earlier in the week (we had a rain delay) but first things first, we’re going to two festivals with friends and soaking up some of the last summer heat (we’re going to be in mid-eighties again).

and…i think i mentioned at least once or twice my affinity for starbucks pumpkin spice lattes. well, my sweet husband bought me a pumpkin spice via packet, and hello amazing. they only cost $6.95 (from a target starbucks) with each package containing 5 sleeves. i tried sprinkling just a fraction of a sleeve into my homemade latte and perfecto!!! same amazing taste and now i’ll get like 2 dozen drinks per via packet. i feel like i’m getting away with something bigtime. just saying, you might want to try it!

roadtrip to aspen

8

last week we snuck off to aspen for the day, and oh how we’re missing being on the road. but we’re so lucky to have so much close by, and the most beautiful scenery. aspen is a really ritzy little town, think cadillac golf carts for tooling around in, lots of boots, furs, and prada stores. it was cool enough for our first pumpkin spice latte of the season, gosh those things are addicting! this drive is our favorite so far, but i’ve got a roadtrip up my sleeve that i’ve been working hard to get the mister to go on for awhile now, it’s a little bigger, an overnighter, so hopefully i’ll be sharing that one sooooon. plus the leaves are changing fast in the mountains, the weather is getting cooler, it’s perfect timing.

p.s. this part of the drive took us over independence pass, one stretch is extremely narrow, at one point we might as well have been in the car with the people passing next to us, and no vehicles over 35 ft are allowed, but honestly that seems like it’s pushing it to me, i don’t think i’d want to be in anything larger than a van or suv.

a *MUST* have

quietside

best. best. BEST. thing. ever. depending on the size of your house (and water needs to fit said house) a regular water heater will be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to ? making it most certainly a less expensive way to go for heating your water. but! if your budget allows you to spurge a bit, for our needs to the tune of $1500, you can have a quietside tankless water heater. and for that pretty penny.. you’ll have unlimited (UNLIMITED) hot water. you can take a steaming hot shower for an hour, no problem. got guests, like 10, back-to-back hot showers.. no problem. and can I just tell you… it. is. HEAVEN. i turn the shower on and 30 seconds later it’s piping hot and ready to go for(ever). two things we are pretty much over the moon about…. this and wall mounted toilets with no yucky bases to clean. just saying.. leave a little extra room in the budget, you’ll never regret it.
(~we purchased ours directly from quietside)

we passed gas

1

gas-meter

remember this post from what seems like forever and ever ago? back when we had grass…oh how we miss you grass, lush and green and NOT muddy. one day, sigh. anyway, one usually doesn’t brag about passing gas, but we can’t help it, this is the stuff dreams are made of for home builders or renovators. gas! what does this mean? heat! hot water! see what I mean, it’s a big deal. the gas guy came and gave us our brand new meter, we were as happy to see him as just about anyone we’ve seen in a long time. and heat we do have… i’m about 7 layers deep on to-do’s though so more later.

drywall

1

drywall 2

→ drywall got started and I forgot to show pictures, we were on the move on drywall just before heading east, and after the living and bedroom ceilings were installed is the first thing that got picked back up again. it’s one of the most exciting things so far (who thought drywall could be exciting??) it’s making the house take form like nothing else, we have rooms!! i don’t know how many drywall pictures you want to see, but it’s a work in progress as i type these words. not a lot of diy to walk you through on, but one thing the husband insists on using is screws not nails. with nails, over time, pressure can allow the nails to push out and when you look at a wall closely you can see small indentations where the nails pop. with screws you’re much more tightly fastened and no popping out later.

day one. again.

5

we drove just under 1600 miles in two days (with a quickie visit in between) and we are really, really glad to be home! our first travel day was sunny and beautiful, but day number two, not so much. non-stop rain and foggy like pea soup for the first eleven hours. the most perfect welcome home? only five minutes after crossing into colorado we had sunny blue skies. it was cause for celebration.

the last thing we had hoped to show you before heading out to the carolinas was the porch roof but it wasn’t finishes until late in the evening and then we left in early morning darkness. i tried taking a photo anyway but night photography and a point and shoot don’t really go together (at least with me manning the camera). so our first thing to show you coming back is that we finally got all of that pretty silver metal installed.

we have a long to-do list. this seems to be a recurring theme, one that we’d like to reverse for the upcoming year. (; we are getting to some fun DIY so be ready.. like finishing walls, tiling the master bath (big big BIG fun plans for that little space), doors, a fireplace, a new age fancy pants heat and ac system.. lots. of. stuff. be patient, we’re both scrambling around like crazy, but we’re feeling it, we must, we must, we must create more dust… here we go. again.

blog.i.ver.sary.

we’re one!! over one thousand blog posts later.. here we are. we’re not where we thought we’d be, even though we had no idea where that would be. funny how that works out. we drove around THIRTY THOUSAND MILES (all caps were totally necessary, that’s a lot of driving!). we’ve been in almost every state and can’t wait to see the ones we’ve missed and saw some fun roadside attractions.

i’ve taken about 5000 photographs. he has taken about 5. hmmm.. now you know why he’s the only one in all of the photos, he is the ham of the family though. photography and the editing (even if it’s just resizing) is the most time consuming thing of the whole blogging process, but how else could we share the biggest legs or longest map?

of those 5000 photos, not included were about an additional 1000 of blurry trees as we zipped down the highway, instead of some beautiful something, the photo snapped in front of a tree. seriously, a thousand might be a bit of an exaggeration, but hundreds for sure.

we know for sure that the united states is beautiful to drive through, has something for everyone, is nothing like we expected and exactly what we expected. we’ve been in more wind in the first 6 months of the year than we’ve been in our entire lives and realized the u.s. has more desert than we ever imagined. we’ve not been to one single state/city/town that at least three people didn’t say they’ve had the weirdest and most unusual weather they have ever had there this past year. lucky us to be here, there and everywhere to concur on this with them.

we’ve learned that we can live in 175sq. ft together for a year and still be married. that we are adaptable. hello laundromats, strange bathrooms, and no more hot showers steps away from the bed each morning. going outside to turn the oven on, wearing a shower robe outside, en route to the shower house and seeing more people on that walk than we’d normally see all day. adaptable. yes.

thanks to each and every one of you for following along with us… who knows what’s next.
