We love Austin. We love Top Notch. And. We love Dazed and Confused. We had so much fun going around the city looking for movie filming locations and by far our very favorite is Top Notch. I miss it. Sean misses it. It has the best veggie burger and the soda on tap is like old time soda fountain soda (well our childhood old since we weren’t really around in true soda shop time). But seriously, we went (twice) and had burgers, and yes-we-did…have fries and onion rings and fried okra.. we know we know!! excess fried foods.. we couldn’t help ourselves. Twice was being really, really good because we both could have went everyday. No matter where you go in town, do not, do not, do not! Not go to Top Notch. It is high on the coolest movie location spots and has a couple of props from the movie (soul pole anyone?) and you get good diner style food, it’s a no-brainer. It’ll be a first stop for us when we visit again.

Amarillo RV Ranch is the busiest RV park we’ve been at since we hit the road. There were people checking in from morning till evening. Amarillo is definitely a crossroads for a lot of people and they’re all staying at this park, us included! Although we didn’t find a ton to do in Amarillo this park offered a great opportunity to catch up on day to day stuff. And, huge perk.. they have phenomenal internet service and great cable. Which means we got to catch up on some tv time (like the last 5 episodes of Raising Hope.. so funny!) and didn’t even feel guilty about it because it was super duper windy and there wasn’t much to do in town anyway.
The park itself is a flat grassy/dirt park, all spots are pull through, the clubhouse has a big indoor pool, the laundry facilities were great and the front desk volunteers were extremely friendly. If you have kids, the waterpark (in above photo) is about ten steps out the front gate. The bathrooms were large with the largest individual shower stalls thus far, so nice to turn around and not hit the wall of the shower..it’s the little things. Another bonus, they take Passport America (for two nights) and we think other club discounts as well, but we have Passport so we didn’t ask further that that. We would definitely stop here again if we pass through the Texas Panhandle. Clark & ellen give it a paws up!

We had one good (translation..non-windy) day while in Amarillo, we sat in the sun enjoyed blue skies and got a birds-eye view of the Air Force doing some sort of training or testing (the plane circled about ten times). I think they were catching up on some tube time on that big satellite… catching some of the final shows of Oprah…which I am missing! How I watched her show my whole life and then the final season I miss.. not fair!

we don’t eat meat but in amarillo the Big Texan is one of the main (and only) attractions
and we didn’t want to disappoint our fans (i know i know, what fans?!) but anyway…
we had to go and see what the fuss was about and he had a texas sized breakfast instead.
there were some funny comments on the winners board, many with mention of how long
they spent in the john after finishing the meal.. not hard to imagine with a gut busting 72 ounces of beef.
challengers sit at an elevated table above the main dining floor & the timer above
counts down from 60 minutes for all to see..but no takers while we were there.
he ate the whole thing….
remember the commercial??
(amazingly we saw billboards advertising The Big Texas in Arizona..)

Cadillac Ranch is a motherload as far as roadside attractions go, definitely one of the best we’ve seen. I took tons of photos because of all I had heard about Cadillac Ranch I had never seen any pictures of the cars up close and thought you might not have either.. so here you go!
Hey.. it’s no Eiffel Tower, but I couldn’t resist… (:
(wanna go.. it’s just West of Amarillo off of I-40, exit 60.
It’s on a frontage road (old route 66) and has a gate that’s always open)

Amarillo doesn’t have a ton going on, we’re not trying to dis it but thems the facts. The downtown is mainly corporate, not much by way of shopping, eating, etc. a little bit, but not much. The town feels like a big spread out suburb versus a real town or city. The plains are pretty though and it’s a good place to stop when criss-crossing the country, we found a nice RV park to stop and regroup at so that makes it even more enticing… we’ll looky-loo review it later this week.

See how big they really are? Without a comparison they look small in the wide open field, not so!
The platform the legs stand upon is larger than it looks, I had to launch myself up there..
couldn’t convince the husband to do it.. photos with roadside attractions… not his #1 to do.
The legs are in the middle of a cow field, we braved it and ran in (not really braved as the cows were completely disinterested in us, but sounds good right?) Anyhoo, if you want to see them they’re located off of I-27 and Sundown Lane.

i know we’ve said it already but ♥we heart austin♥
…a southern city with texas spirit stamped all over it..we’ll be back for sure…
We moved to New Life RV Park in Georgetown, TX from Berry Springs RV hoping for a better bathroom situation. Read about the first stop here. We really wanted to stay in Austin but the one RV place in the city was booked for the month and all other RV parks are located in surrounding suburbs like these two. We drove by quite a few and none looked great. New Life, as you can see from the photos, has very well maintained grounds. The individual sites are very nice, each with bushes bordering between you and your neighbor offering privacy. The pool area is nice but the pool is not heated so pretty chilly even with the hot weather.
Despite our efforts to move onward and upward in the bathroom situation, this park failed miserably. What we didn’t know going in, that we think makes a huge difference, is having separate womens and mens rooms, and this one doesn’t. Just say No to unisex bathrooms. The bathrooms were dirty, really dirty, every single day. In a state or federal park you aren’t paying for this and you go in armed & ready so to speak (not to say those aren’t well kept, you just have different expectations) but in an RV park you are paying for the facility usage, otherwise it would be primitive camping. The toilets had “waste” in them every time and it is not pretty. The floors were always wet and dirty and the cleaning was minimal and non-existent on weekends. It’s byoTP so be forewarned, lest you get yourself in a a situation. They seemed to be used non-stop by men and we don’t know how they keep the big buses they were coming out of to use the facilities, but if how they left the bathrooms was any indication…scary. In summary, the grounds are kept perfect but the bathroom is a big pass.
For this looky-loo review clark & ellen give the same report as last, if you do not need the bathhouse at all it’s a go, if you do, keep on moving.

Berry Springs County Park & Preserve was right down the road from the first RV park we stayed at in the Austin area. (Berry Springs RV park) The park is one of the very pretties we’ve seen. It has groves of Pecan and Oak trees, rolling farm land and a lake for fishing. It is approximately 300 acres encompassing all of the above plus a campground and pavilions available for reserve. The camping is primitive only but if that’s your shtick it is by far the most peaceful and beautiful spot in the area. Even if you don’t camp, if you’re anywhere close it is well worth a visit for hiking and/or a picnic under the Oak trees.
