home base?

1

How many of you live where you do just because you grew up there? How do most people end up living where they do? At least half are probably born and raised within 50 miles and of the other half.. job relocation, marriage relocation. What about the rest?

How many people spin the globe and go in search of that perfect spot….or roadtrip looking for just the right elements to fit their idea of good living? Do you want to ski or snowboard and have it right outside your door? Or have the best mountain biking in the country? Or be where it’s 60-70 degrees all year round, or has hot sun and palm trees?

He and I both moved away from our home towns and states, we both picked various new places that we had never been to to live. I have moved multiple times, ready to try something new and see if it might be where I could imagine never leaving. We know our time in Charlotte has come and gone, we just don’t know where we’ll end up.

Not many people seem to go through this, either there is deep contentment where they have always been or their lives are already so full and intertwined with work and children that moving seems more of a nightmare than a desire. We both marvel at how people can live in areas where it is cold and bitterly cold a lot of the time, like 8 months out of the year. On one hand we get it… it is probably some of the prettiest country around, but snow in May, maybe even June??? How do you do it?

I know I am spoiled by warm weather being a Southern girl and Sean has completely adapted to warm weather after all of his years in the South. We are so excited to see Wyoming and Montana and Canada…and we’ll probably never want to leave once we see those big skies and snow capped mountains, but we will because yesterday it was 60 and windy and we were cold. That’s like summer in the Northwest. We’d never make it. We have friends who live in Minneapolis and they’ve gotten 80+ inches of snow this year….so far. Ouch.

We have learned this on our trip, places are a lot colder than we thought they were. Who knew that as we are about to roll into April that Sequoia National Park would still be covered in snow with more to come? And Yosemite. Forget it. Lake Tahoe… more white powder on the way. Spring is so early in the South that we forgot, or maybe just didn’t realize, it doesn’t even get started till??? June? other places.

This all leads up to two things. If you are traveling and do not want to be caught in cold, snowy weather, start late, stay low in the U.S. and don’t plan on anything even remotely North until June. With the exception of California, you might could head North in May with relative safety.

Secondly, for us, we are traveling with thoughts of where to land, where to call home base. Where we can stop and be while we aren’t touring this great land of ours. And let me tell you, the list is dwindling. Big time. When you don’t want to shovel snow, the list gets a little more narrow. And we love the temperatures of the desert communities we have visited, but…. the saying “what can brown do for you” most certainly was thought up by a desert dweller. Brown is an understatement. We have never seen so much brown scenery in our lives.

We know that the perfect little town is out there, just waiting to be discovered. We also know, it’s probably in the South, it might be hot in the summer… but you don’t have to shovel heat.
