Did you know that this year will be the longest Carnival~Mardi Gras season in the past 68 years? January 6th (always the first day of carnival) to March 8th… 61 days! That’s a lot of partying y’all! Mardi Gras Day ~ Fat Tuesday, marks the close of Carnival and is always measured backward from Easter. The first Tuesday on the calendar, 47 days before Easter, and Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Did you get that?? It’s quite the system.

We learned that Mardi Gras, which we always thought of as just being a New Orleans tradition, actually originated in Mobile, Alabama (neighbor across the bay to Fairhope). Did you know? The first celebration was in Mobile in 1703. After being canceled during the American Civil War, Joe Cain, a Mobile resident, is credited with bringing Mardi Gras back. He paraded the streets of Mobile on Fat Tuesday in 1866 in full costume… and the rest is history. Subsequently this day is called Joe Cain Day by locals. Get your green, purple and plenty of beads ready….

panini pete’s.

Our first day in Fairhope, Alabama started with beignets at Panini Pete’s. The mister was properly introduced to beignets (meaning he was duly powdered before finishing eating). Panini Petes is in the (tiny) Fairhope French Quarter, Sean can officialy say he had his first beignet in the French Quarter (just not the one everyone will be thinking of). We met Pete and had a fun chat, easy to see why the place is so popular…to see more watch this video from the Food Network when Guy Fieri stopped by.
